He noted that mission-driven teams outperform, particularly in startup environments where burnout risk is high. “The right engineer,” he said, “doesn’t just write code, they believe in solving real human problems.” His take on “vibe-coding” reflects how emotion-informed product design is shaping FemTech and mental wellness innovation.

One of the most impactful conversations I had was with Brian M. Green, an AI governance and risk consultant specializing in healthcare. He emphasized that building AI solutions in healthtech requires more than great code or breakthrough ideas, it requires governance by design.

Green outlines three foundational pillars for effective AI governance:
Transparency – Clear articulation of what powers the model, and what decisions it makes.
Observability – The ability to monitor and understand performance over time.
Explainability – Tailoring information so patients, clinicians, insurers, and other stakeholders understand and trust the outputs.

He calls the tension between openness and regulation the "transparency-containment paradox," balancing the desire to be open with the need to protect IP, patient privacy, and compliance. Responsible AI Requires a Governing Body

Green also recommends that health organizations establish a Responsible AI Advisory Committee, modeled after an Institutional Review Board (IRB). This internal group should include data scientists, legal experts, business analysts, sociotechnical leaders, clinical stakeholders, and patient representatives. They oversee AI use cases, ethical concerns, and evolving regulatory requirements like the EU AI Act, now enforceable as of June 2025.

This committee isn’t just oversight, it’s a signal that the organization treats AI like any other clinical intervention, requiring due diligence and human oversight.

Regulatory Readiness: Compliance Isn’t Optional

Regulatory alignment must be foundational, not an afterthought. Standards like HIPAA, FDA guidance, CMS policies, HITECH regulations, and ONC interoperability rules define the legal and ethical landscape for every AI-powered health application. AI solutions that ignore these frameworks risk not only fines but patient harm and institutional distrust.

Data Quality, Interoperability & the FHIR Imperative

An AI model is only as good as the data it consumes. Adhering to FHIR standards and leveraging open APIs are essential to ensure datasets are clean, shareable, and interoperable. Federal and state initiatives—like ONC’s HTI-3 and Washington’s My Health My Data Act—are pushing for greater protections around sensitive data. But despite progress, inconsistent implementation and fragmented data ecosystems remain major hurdles.

The EOB Opportunity: From Confusion to Clarity

Few documents confuse patients more than the Explanation of Benefits (EOB). AI presents a powerful opportunity to make EOBs readable, useful, and empowering. It can translate complex billing into plain language, flag anomalies, and surface coverage gaps. As product leader Thomas Your put it, imagine the power of authorized EOB sharing, giving clinicians real-time insights into the financial barriers patients face, and prompting smarter, more equitable care decisions.

Bias & Representation: Equity Must Be Built In

Equity isn’t a feature — it’s a foundation. AI in healthcare must be trained on diverse, representative datasets to avoid perpetuating systemic disparities. Without deliberate inclusion, we risk embedding bias into the very tools designed to solve it. Nowhere is this more urgent than in women’s health and FemTech, where underrepresentation in clinical research has long shaped suboptimal outcomes.

Strategic Collaboration: No One Builds This Alone

The future of AI in healthtech won’t be decided by technologists alone. Hospital CIOs, startup founders, regulators, public health leaders, even patients all have a role to play. Scaling impact means sharing data responsibly, aligning incentives across sectors, and listening deeply to those on the frontlines of care.

Building Teams with Intention

As Green emphasized, AI governance starts with talent readiness. Organizations should begin with a readiness assessment, then hire with intention, bringing on not just engineers, but professionals with deep knowledge of clinical workflows, regulatory landscapes, and ethical design. Teams should reflect diverse disciplines and lived experiences, empowering them to challenge assumptions and build better systems.
This approach is particularly vital in FemTech, where data gaps and historical exclusion demand intentional inclusion, intersectionality, and explainability from the start.

Emerging Ethical Frontiers


Beyond compliance, the most pressing challenges in AI in HealthTech and Innovating with integrity, aren’t technical: they’re human. We must grapple with:

Explainability at every touchpoint
Longitudinal data use and patient autonomy

Solving these questions isn't about better algorithms. It’s about better ethics. If Theranos taught us anything, it’s that trust in healthcare tech is fragile and when ethics are bypassed, the fallout isn’t just financial, it’s fatal.
