7 Strategies to Ace that Interview

Getting ready for your interview can be challenging as it's coupled with meeting new people, selling yourself and your skills, and often getting the third degree about what you know or don't know, all while staying upbeat and enthusiastic through it all.

We at ITEOM want to encourage you. Just a little preparation can go a long way!

1. The two P's = Practice and Prepare:

Review typical job interview questions that may be asked and practice your answers. It’s equally important to listen carefully during your interview to answer correctly and concisely. Have a list of your own questions ready to ask the employer as this projects your interest in the organization.

2. Show them you know where you're at:

"What do you know about this company?" - is a common question asked and if it's asked you will know exactly how to respond. If this question isn't asked it's a great way to demonstrate what you know about the company on your own which can be linked to expressing how your skills can tie into the company.

3. Connect with your Interviewer:

Try to develop a connection with your interviewer. Start by checking out their LinkedIn profile. Know the interviewer's name, and use it during the job interview. People tend to hire candidates they like and who seem to be a good fit for the company's culture.

4. Two P's with a twist:

No planning = Plan to fail.

So instead of just printing extra copies of your resume, have a notepad and pen ready to go and have a great interview ready outfit at hand. This is so you can interview on short notice without having to worry at the last minute. (Yes, this is important for digital interviews, too!)

5. First impressions count:

On time means five to ten minutes _early_. If need be, drive to the interview location ahead of time so you know exactly where you are going and how long it will take to get there. If you're interviewing virtually, have all the technology set and ready in advance. Be sure to do a trial run to be sure everything is working properly, and you're comfortable with it.

6. One step closer, 'Staying Calm' is the name of the game:

It's important to try and relax, stay as calm as possible and remember that your body language says as much about you as your answers to the questions.

7. Send a Thank You

It's easy enough to end the conversation with a thank you, but a follow up that articulates your understanding of the conversation and next steps and thoughtful gratitude for them taking the time to meet with you goes a long way!

You've got this, you've planned and practiced and now it's all about maintaining that charismatic and cheerful oura and setting it into motion!
