Let's Talk Tech Trends of 2022

With tech advances, literally every second of every day enabling faster progress, causing an acceleration of change at home and in the workplace… It continues to be a hell of a time to be alive.

COVID 19 inspired those who were not that intouch with their tech side, to learn more about tech and became familiar with it or even a new-found passion in it. Many software engineers really knuckled down in times where leaving the house wasn't an option, and technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) can now better understand us and perform incredibly complex tasks.

But don’t worry, AI and progressive technology isn’t going to replace all job prospects. In fact, this just means we have the opportunity to stay current with the latest technologies, all while keeping our eyes on emerging tech to better understand which skills are needed in order to secure a safe job and advance ourselves in our current positions and in the future.

With tech taking us to new heights at an extremely rapid pace, what should we be looking out for?

Artificial Intelligence has risen as a super star in 2022, living our own modern day ExMachina isn’t too far fetched. But other tech trends should keep you on your toes. Here are some exciting tech trends that presented themselves this year (2022), and few that are on the horizon.

1: Smarter Devices - Still thriving, and getting smarter!

It's safe to say that almost EVERY job makes use of smart software applications to make work life more manageable. These devices are of high demand as more companies transform into digital spaces. Many jobs require proficiency in IT and it only benefits your ability to thrive. Fortunately, smart device creators are making them easier and easier to use.

2: Datafication - Knowledge is power.

This is the modification of human chores and tasks into data-driven technology. From our smartphones, industrial machines, and office applications to AI-powered appliances and everything in between, data is here to help, "remember," and assist in tasks via your apps on your devices or websites that you might frequent. Think of it as a large BRAIN that stores information used to provide a better, faster and efficient experience. It has become an in-demand specialization in our economy as we all need 'information' to work from, refer back to and to compare and recognise adjustments. It’s optimizing our ability to increase productivity.

3: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning - Keep an eye out…

Its extraordinary effects on how we live, work and play are only in the early stages but AI reared its head quite proudly this year. AI has always been known for its superiority in image and speech recognition, navigation apps, smartphone personal assistants, ride-sharing apps and so much more; but we’re currently seeing it proliferate our smart devices and apps we use in our day-to-day. Now that the groundwork is in place and in hand, we should expect to see more AI being used to analyze interactions to determine underlying connections, to help predict the demand for services like healthcare and hospitals; ultimately, enabling authorities to make better decisions about resource utilization and increasing positive outcomes. AI will also aid in detecting the changing patterns of customer behavior more accurately through analysis of data in near real-time; thus driving revenues and enhancing personalized experiences. With the importance of AI making its way across various sectors - new jobs will be created in development, programming, testing, support and maintenance, just to name a few.

4: Digital Trust - More secure, the better!

With our lives submerged in digital devices, we need to be able to trust these devices. Our devices hold powerful and sensitive information - that in the wrong hands - can be quite detrimental to our livelihoods, personally and professionally. This is exactly why we need the undenying trust of these devices to assure asset and personal identity protection and security. To create a safer space for digital users, cybersecurity and ethical hacking are major specializations that many companies have invested in, making the use of these needed techs dependable and safe. Cybersecurity will remain high value because it will continue to evolve to defend against persistent hackers.

5: Edge Computing - Conjuring the last mile.

This is a new technology trend to watch, with major players AWS (Amazon Web Services), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform dominating the market. As cloud computing is still growing, more and more businesses are migrating to a cloud solution. However, Edge computing is designed to help solve some of the identified cloud computing problems and can now bypass the lag caused by cloud computing and getting data to a data center for processing. It can exist “on the edge,” closer to where computing needs to happen. And because of this, Edge Computing acts as a mini datacenter that's used to process time-sensitive data in remote locations with limited or no connectivity to a centralized location. LinkedIn alone has over 12,000 Edge Computing opportunities listed.

6: Blockchain - Set in stone and secured.

When we think Blockchain - we think Cryptocurrencies. This is not the case though, as blockchain offers security in multiple ways. Blockchain in simple words - is known as data you can only add to, not take away from or change. As it's a CHAIN of data. Not being able to change the previous blocks is what makes it so secure. What's good to know is that blockchains are consensus-driven, so no one entity can take control of the data.

Even though the crypto market has plummeted- blockchain technology is highly in-demand across many industries and skilled professionals are very valuable to growing organizations.

Technology continues to evolve at such a pace, it's truly difficult to keep up with it all; in fact, 5G, Metaverse, IoB, and VR rightfully have their place when it comes to new tech. Skilled professionals will continue to be in demand and the opportunity for a promising career in technology is limitless. Considering a change? Start with research to identify your interests and passion, then dip your toes in and find training through online courses, universities, etc. Better yet, find a mentor willing to help. Getting on board at the early stages of these trending technologies will position you for success now and in the future!
